On Monday morning, the JSE continued its gains after breaking through the 83 000 points mark for the first time on Friday.
At around 11:30 the South African bourse hit a new all-time high of 83 620 points – up by close to 0.9%.
The rally follows optimistic economic data from the United States. The world’s biggest economy’s consumer price index showed that inflation is subsiding, which in turn supports expectations that Federal Reserve interest rate cuts are imminent.
All eyes will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who will deliver a keynote address in Wyoming on Friday on the US economic outlook.
On home soil, South African financial services group Absa led the charge with a 4.6% gain around 11h30 on Monday, followed by Gold Fields (up 3.2%) and Vodacom (up 3.04%).
Meanwhile, the rand continued its gains from the previous week, trading 0.53% higher at R17.78 around 11am.- bbc.com
