Jerod Mayo becomes the youngest NFL head coach at 37 years

The team was able to hire Mayo without a lengthy interview process due to a succession plan that was placed in a contract extension with the team that he signed last offseason.

Jerod Mayo is the latest appointment for the New England Patriots, taking over the head coaching reins as per reports from WBZ-TV on Friday. This development occurred shortly after the team announced its separation from the long-standing coach, Bill Belichick, after a 24-year tenure.

The news originated from ESPN’s Adam Schefter early Friday, with Steve Burton of WBZ-TV verifying the details. A formal introduction for Mayo as head coach is anticipated at a press conference scheduled for the following week.

In the midst of live coverage by CBS News Boston, it’s clear that the search for a new coach was a swift affair. Robert Kraft previously remarked that they intended to fill the position expediently, a statement which rang true, given that Jerod Mayo was the singular focus of their search; The Athletic reports that the Patriots didn’t entertain interviews with any other candidates.

The path to a speedy hire was paved with a previously agreed upon succession arrangement embedded in Mayo’s last contract extension with the team from the preceding offseason.

Regarded as the successor to Belichick following Josh McDaniels’ departure to Las Vegas, Mayo has a long-standing history with the Patriots, both on the field as a player and off the field as a coach.

Selected by the Patriots in the 2008 draft, Mayo’s linebacker career spanned eight years within the heart of the Patriots’ defense, retiring after the 2015 season. Returning to football a few years later, Mayo joined the Patriots’ coaching staff, becoming the inside linebackers coach in 2019. Though he never officially held the defensive coordinator title, he has effectively managed the defence alongside Stephen Belichick in recent seasons.

Stepping into some sizable shoes, Mayo faces the formidable task of succeeding arguably the most esteemed head coach in history. Yet, the defense under his de facto leadership shone last season, standing out as one of the NFL’s finest despite the team’s overall struggles, finishing with a 4-13 record. Additionally, Mayo commands the respect of players throughout the Patriots’ locker room.

At the age of 37, Mayo is set to become the NFL’s youngest head coach, marking the 15th head coaching change in the history of the Patriots franchise.
