South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, announced the official inclusion of Saudi Arabia along with four other nations that were extended invitations to expand the BRICS alliance.

At the outset of 2024, there were emerging apprehensions concerning Saudi Arabia’s integration into the Alliance, with the kingdom indicating hesitation and the need for thorough contemplation of the geopolitical repercussions of such an association.

Nonetheless, in a recent press briefing, Foreign Minister Pandor disclosed that Saudi Arabia has now affirmed its acceptance of the invitation to join the BRICS group.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Officially Joins the BRICS Alliance

In a significant shift of the global geopolitical landscape, the BRICS alliance has broadened its membership in 2023. This historic enlargement marks the alliance’s first substantive growth since the induction of South Africa in 2001. At the pinnacle of this year’s annual summit, six nations were extended an invitation to join the influential group, a gesture highlighting the BRICS’ strategic intent to diversify and strengthen its international influence.

Amidst this period of potential expansion, Argentina respectfully bowed out due to political transition within the nation, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the alliance’s proposed enlargement. Furthermore, the international community has been carefully monitoring Saudi Arabia’s position following the country’s tentative statements, which suggested consideration of membership might extend into 2024. This sparked concerns about a potential deferment or outright rebuff from the Kingdom.

Nevertheless, such concerns have been allayed. In a definitive move, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has formally solidified its status as a BRICS member. This confirmation was announced by South Africa’s esteemed Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, who also acknowledged the positive responses from the remaining invitees. This heralds the entry of Saudi Arabia into the BRICS fold, alongside the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Ethiopia, and Iran, marking a notable chapter in the alliance’s evolution and underscoring the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering collaborative international relationships within the framework of the BRICS nations.

“To the BRICS confirmations, five out of the six confirmed. That is Saudi Arabia, UAE, Ethiopia, Iran… and Egypt,” Pando said at a news conference. “Argentina has written to indicate that they will not act on this successful application by the previous administration to become full members of BRIFS, and we accept their decision.”

Saudi Arabia has been widely regarded as a pivotal member within the alliance’s strategic framework. Nonetheless, the nation’s strong relationship with the United States poses potential challenges to the success of their prospective integration.

As such, Saudi Arabia’s official accession to the bloc remains unconfirmed. Furthermore, it is anticipated that Saudi Arabia may consider endorsing the initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on the US dollar, initiatives that are increasingly central to the collective’s agenda.
