ZIMBABWEAN businessman, David Machingaidze has taken his country’s tobacco sector to new heights with the official opening of Ethical Sales Floor (ESF), a massive new auction facility that expands Zimbabwe’s marketing infrastructure.
The country’s government views this development as a catalyst for increased competition among buyers, which is expected to drive up tobacco prices and empower farmers.
Machingaidze is exceptionally driven visionary leader and with a proven track record as a turnaround strategist with over 20 years of excellence at CEO level.
For the record, currently ESF is offering the best prices in Zimbabwe since the auction floors opening three weeks ago. Indications are that this trend will continue. ESF – a 9 000 square meter complex capable of handling 7000 bales daily is Zimbabwe’s third tobacco auction floor.
Speaking at the official opening of the auction floor, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Vangelis Haritatos commended the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) for licensing the new floor, framing it as a shift towards greater transparency, efficiency, and farmer empowerment.
He was represented at the ceremony by TIMB chief executive Emmanuel Matsvaire, who told attendees that the auction system remains the primary price discovery mechanism for the entire industry — setting benchmarks that flow through to contract pricing across all platforms.
“At the core of today’s events is our shared commitment to value addition and beneficiation, as enshrined in the Tobacco Value Chain Transformation Plan 2,” said Harritatos.
“The new Ethical cybertec-powered floors will process and grade tobacco in country, capturing greater value locally rather than exporting raw leaf. This means fairer prices, reduced logistics costs, and thousands of jobs for our youth.”

He said the launch of the cigarette brand elevates the value addition strategy further, providing a premium, Zimbabwe-made product that transforms beneficiated tobacco into a world-class offering.
“Aligned with Plan 2’s targets, this initiative boosts domestic value addition towards 70 percent by 2030, builds agro-industrial capacity, and reinvests profits into farmer training and infrastructure. Over 10 years, Ethical Holdings has empowered smallholders, introduced tech-driven projects, and set a benchmark for the sector.”
Zimbabwe operates a dual tobacco marketing system consisting of auction and contract platforms. Under the auction system, self-funded farmers sell their crop at the floors, whereas the contract system requires growers to sell directly to the merchants who provided their production inputs.
The auction system remains a critical pillar of the industry, serving as the primary price discovery mechanism. Its performance sets the benchmark for contract prices, ensuring that market vibrancy translates into fair value across all trading floors.
The tobacco auction facility commenced operations at the onset of the current marketing season, with its official opening coinciding with the landmark launch of Ethical cigarette brand.
The move aligns with the Government’s value addition and beneficiation strategy, aimed at maximising returns from the tobacco value chain. With Machingaidze’s leadership this vision will be achieved.
David’s key strengths include an impeccable reputation and track record, coupled with indefatigable advocacy for ethical leadership. He maintains an unyielding focus on achieving results and excels in engaging stakeholders at the highest levels of international business and politics.
Machingaidze’s leadership and vision continue to make significant strides in the empowerment of marginalized communities, fostering sustainable development and economic growth through ethical business practices.
He was the first indigenous managing director for Tobacco Sales Floor, the world’s premier tobacco auction floor and a subsidiary of the blue-chip listed company, TSL Limited.
